About Us

Located in Covington, KY at the heart of Northern Kentucky, the Life Learning Center (LLC) is a United Way funded, not-for-profit organization that works with multiple local community partners and progressive employers.  Together we take individuals who demonstrate a commitment to stable employment and help prepare them for productive, sustainable careers. We do that through education, job search training, and life coaching. Our strategy is focused solely on employment enhancement, and is supplemented by four intertwined themes: foundation for success, personal life skills, education and/or skills advancement, and community involvement.

Our Core Program

Our employment education program helps you to discover your strengths, skills and abilities and how to best express them to potential employers. Our week-long course, offered the second week of each month, instructs you on the proper way to complete an application, write resumes and cover letters, and lets you practice successful interview techniques.  Following the basic one week course our Job Coaches then help you plan your job search and help you focus on the jobs that meet your interests and you are best suited for. This is an interactive class where the Members have an opportunity to work with each other to practice the skills taught during the course.

Every Thursday evening we offer follow-up sessions that build on the basic class and offer not only job training but life skills education as well.  It is our goal to see Members develop a career, not just get a job. To this end, t
he Life Learning Center team works with and provides support for our Members for a minimum of one year after completion of the training.

This is a FREE job search and employment education program that really works…if you are willing to really put forth the effort and work it.

Our History

In 1998 a group of established and passionate entrepreneurs, leaders and key contributors to the NKY area began having conversations about a “missing link” in the social services/non-profit arena.  They recognized that there were many reputable organizations having a solid impact on a specific service area.  However, there was not an organization that was really addressing the “root cause” of poverty, that being lack of financial resources due to the cycle of undereducated and underemployed individuals in our community.  After much research on best practices and services nationally, that were making a lasting impact on the entire community, the vision for the Life Learning Center was born.  In June of 2006 the Life Learning Center opened with the hiring of the first Executive Director, George Kent PhD.  The first class was offered in October 2006.

Community Need

One of the major driving agents for economic growth in the Northern Kentucky community is an educated and committed work force.  Even in today’s economy, there is a demand for motivated people who can fill entry level positions, who can advance into the semi-skilled and lower management positions, and who have the transferable skills needed to move into higher positions of responsibility.

Local employers have shared with us that it is not the lack of knowledge that causes most of their employees to be unsuccessful in jobs, but that they need better personal and attitudinal skills.
The skills addressed through our “Working Toward A Better Life Program” include everything from time management training to improved customer service now-how, from a lack of sensitivity of the company’s informal work rules to what appears to be lack of ambition.

By educating LLC Members on the critical nature of employer expectations, we can help both the job applicant and the employer in making fruitful and sustainable employee/employer relationships
